Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious health condition characterised by pauses in breathing or shallow breathing during sleep. Repeated breathing interruptions throughout the night not only disrupt sleep quality but also negatively impact cardiovascular health, brain functions, and overall quality of life.

Patients with sleep apnea often present with complaints of loud snoring, breathing pauses during sleep, sudden awakenings, morning headaches, and excessive daytime sleepiness. These issues reduce concentration and work performance and increase the risk of traffic and occupational accidents. Untreated sleep apnea significantly raises the risk of developing chronic conditions such as hypertension, arrhythmias, heart failure, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

There are three main types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when throat muscles relax and block the airway during sleep. Central sleep apnea happens when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles controlling breathing. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of both types.

Dr. Fatih Turan provides sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment services with over 20 years of experience and advanced modern methods. Many patients from Europe visit his clinic for treatment and consultation, including:

Germany: North Rhine-Westphalia (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund), Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart
Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague
Belgium: Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp
France: Paris, Strasbourg, Lyon
Austria: Vienna
Switzerland: Zurich, Basel

Patients first undergo a detailed medical history and examination. If necessary, polysomnography (sleep study) is conducted to analyse breathing pauses, oxygen levels, heart rhythm, and sleep stages in detail, helping determine the type and severity of sleep apnea.

Treatment planning depends on the severity of sleep apnea. In mild cases, lifestyle changes such as weight loss and avoiding alcohol and smoking are recommended. In moderate to severe cases, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy is the most commonly used treatment, keeping the airway open during sleep and preventing snoring and apnea episodes.

When structural problems such as large tonsils, a long uvula, or nasal obstructions are present, surgical interventions may be considered. Dr. Fatih Turan prepares personalised treatment plans to ensure his patients achieve healthy and quality sleep.

Untreated sleep apnea increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes and can shorten lifespan. In children, sleep apnea may lead to growth problems, attention deficits, and reduced academic performance.

At Dr. Fatih Turan’s clinic, each patient is assessed in detail, and a multidisciplinary approach is provided when necessary, collaborating with ENT, pulmonary, and neurology specialists to address all aspects of treatment and improve patient quality of life.
