Ear aesthetic surgery, known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to correct congenital or acquired deformities of the ears. Ear aesthetic surgeries are generally performed under local anaesthesia. For children, general anaesthesia is preferred. The operation takes approximately 1 – 1.5 hours. Before surgery, the ear structure is evaluated in detail, the degree of deformity is determined, and the surgical plan is thoroughly explained to the patient.
In prominent ear correction, the cartilage is reshaped and fixed closer to the head at an ideal angle with permanent stitches. The incision is made behind the ear, leaving no visible scars.
Post-operative care is crucial. Patients are required to wear a special bandage for the first week. After the bandage is removed, wearing a headband at night for a few weeks is recommended to protect the ears. Mild bruising and swelling may occur but resolve within days. Most patients return to their daily routines within 3-5 days.
Otoplasty can be performed from the age of 5-6, preventing possible social and psychological issues before starting school. For adults, ear aesthetic surgery can be safely performed at any age.
